Big Sur is the stretch of Highway 1 between Carmel and San Simeon where the Santa Lucia Mountains fall straight into the Pacific. For an elopement it offers two worlds in one day: a ceremony on a cliff above the water, then portraits in a redwood canyon fifteen minutes inland.
Why elope in Big Sur
The light. On a clear fall evening the sun drops into the ocean and lights the cliffs from the side, and there is nothing between you and the horizon. It is also one of the few places in California where a couple can elope at sunrise on the coast and still be eating dinner in Carmel by seven.
Where the ceremony happens
- Cliffside pullouts and bluffs along Highway 1, for two-person ceremonies with a view.
- Redwood groves in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and Limekiln, for shade, quiet and fog insurance.
- Private venues such as Glen Oaks, Post Ranch Inn and Ventana for couples who want a small celebration after the vows.
- Pfeiffer Beach for purple sand and the keyhole arch at sunset.
What to know before you book
Summer fog is real and can sit on the coast all day. We steer couples toward September through November and build every Big Sur timeline with an inland backup. Cell service disappears south of Carmel, lodging is limited and books early, and Highway 1 closes from time to time after winter storms, so check the road status the week of your date.
How we work here
Our Adventure collection covers Big Sur with no travel fee. We scout the exact bluff for your date and time, handle the state park permit, and plan the day around the light rather than the clock.
