Hugo and Ivonet dancing on the Mesquite Flat dunes at sunset during their Death Valley elopement

Real story · February 2024

Hugo & Ivonet, Death Valley.

Trash bags, a tiny island, and a sunset serenade on the dunes.

The film

Death Valley gave them a day nobody could have planned. A rare winter rain had filled Badwater Basin, and Lake Manly, which exists maybe once a decade, was sitting there in the sun.

The day

We waded out with trash bags over our clothes to a tiny island in the middle of the lake, where Hugo and Ivonet said their vows with mountains reflected on every side. That evening, on the Mesquite Flat dunes, Hugo pulled out a guitar and sang to her while the sun went down. Ivonet later wrote that Randy “made this experience unforgettable: full agenda, places to visit, food, sunset picnic at the dunes.”

What made it theirs

  • Vows on an island that will not exist again for years.
  • A picnic on the dunes with the whole sky turning orange.
  • A sunset serenade nobody saw coming, including us.

Read our Death Valley elopement guide for when to go and how to plan around the heat.
